So i finally completed my dining chair project and managed to get in to the university's end of year show,
This was quite a stressful project for me for a few reasons, firstly the time period we had to make this project in was short and also i have never made a chair before so i didn't know what problems i was going to come across while making it.
Concept
The inspiration for the design concept behind the dining chair came from research in to Japanese culture, i found a religion called 'Shinto' which is about purification and cleansing, so i looked in to purification and cleansing and it was about removing unwanted elements, when designing the chair i wanted the chair to represent that (i hope that comes across in the final piece), Another aspect to the religion i found was a large entrance gate which leads them to the temple. The gate represents a gateway from the everyday world to the divine world, i wanted to relate this concept to the chair, so when you walking in to the restaurant to walk through the door in to a new world and experience, also when you sit down at the table you are having a different dining experience to what you would normally have, so the chair acts as an entrance way to a new world and experience.
Another word i looked in to was organic, so i wanted the chair joints to flow and blend in to each other and seem like one piece.
Aswell as looking at Shinto i looked a little bit in to what colours represent, it seems quite obvious but i found white was the most pure colour. So i wanted to use white in the design, one of the ideas i had was to bleach the chair to make it go white but the process took to long to do in the time i had.
For the summer i am working with Opus Magnum to get some experience in the industry and also to keep my hand in on making over the summer.
